Evelyn Trudeau Cottrell, wife of famed New Orleans clarinetist Louis A. Cottrell, Jr. died in Missouri City, Texas on August 7, 2012 at the age of 96. Mrs. Cottrell, a lifelong resident of New Orleans until Hurricane Katrina, grew up in the 7th ward and was the daughter of Louisiana civil rights pioneer A.M. Trudeau, Sr. She retired as an executive of the Safety Industrial Life Insurance Company, a company co-founded by Mr. Trudeau, after 50 years of service. After the death of her husband in 1978, Mrs. Cottrell assumed management responsibilities for the Louis Cottrell Jazz Band along with the venerable Onward Brass Band, then under the leadership of her cousin, Placide Adams, Jr.
